The Design, Research, and Education for Additive Manufacturing Systems (DREAMS) Lab in Virginia Tech's Department of Mechanical Engineering conducts research across the value chain of Additive Manufacturing (AM, also referred to as "3D Printing") technologies ().
The DREAMS Lab is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to explore the nexus of cybermanufacturing and AM. Specifically, the researcher will continue DREAMS lab research in the areas of cyber-physical security (e.g., ) and voxel-based representations of solid geometry (e.g., -Tedia.pdf; doi:10.1115/DETC2017-68230). The researcher will investigate cyber-physical vulnerabilities in data file formats common to AM systems. The researcher will also explore novel voxel-based representations of solid geometry for implementation in AM systems and will evaluate their efficiency and effectiveness at mitigating cyber vulnerabilities. Applicants with deep understanding of computer graphics and solid modeling, with interests in advanced manufacturing and cyber security applications, are strongly encouraged to apply.
The candidate will conduct research that primarily focuses on supporting the national security community. Consequently, US citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.
Responsibilities
o Participate in researching cyber-physical vulnerabilities of existing file formats for representing solid geometries for Additive Manufacturing (AM) applications (e.g., STL, 3MF, AMF).
o Develop and evaluate software for red teaming cyber-physical security vulnerabilities in AM
o Develop and evaluate software for voxel-based representations of complex, multi-material structures for production via AM.
o Contribute as a team member on a transdisciplinary project
o Work independently as a researcher and scholar
o Assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate student researchers
o Communicate with external visitors and project sponsors
